PARABNORMAL NEWS — Jupiter, our largest planet, has surpassed Saturn with the discovery of 12 new moons.
The gas giant now has 92 known moons, the most in the solar system, second to Saturn with 83.
Discovered by telescopes in Hawaii and Chile in 2021 and 2022, the moons have now been confirmed.
Finding new moons is challenging for astronomers, given that they are small enough to evade detection and can probably only be seen using extremely powerful telescopes.
“The reason is that they are closer to Jupiter and the scattered light from the planet is tremendous,” said Dr. Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science, who led the research.
The moons far above Jupiter take more than 340 days to complete an orbit.
